San Antonio Breastfeeding Coalition

Thank you for making The 2009 Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge was a SUCCESS!

The San Antonio Breastfeeding Coalition (SABC) hosted the city's 2009 Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge on Saturday, October 3rd at the CentroMed Encino Ballroom. The event enjoyed it's biggest turn-out with more than 125 attendees which included more than 40 families and 28 mothers who proudly latched on at 11 am local time.

Besides enjoying food, music and fun, the mothers represented San Antonio in a worldwide challenge to see which participating area could have the most mothers and babies latched on at the same time. Although the results are not in for other participating cities, San Antonio's  breastfeeding community is proud to have exceeded last year's local numbers!

The SABC would like to thank the nursing mothers and babies, the wonderful volunteers and the generous sponsors who helped make this year's Breastfeeding Challenge a success!

Pictures of the event will be posted on this website soon! Please visit The Quintessence Foundation to learn more about the history of the Breastfeeding Challenge and to find out about other region's exciting totals! If you participated in San Antonio's event and have photos to share, please e-mail them to us!

International Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge

The 2008 International Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge was a HUGE success! The results are still being posted. Go to www.babyfriendly.ca for the most current numbers. As of January 15, 2009 it was recorded that 19 countries participated; 316 sites were registered (still awaiting results from 16 sites) and 7632 babies were latched on at 11:00am on Saturday October 11, 2008! San Antonio contributed 22 babies, almost double the number that participated last year. One mom was tandem nursing. Two of the moms particiapted last year!

The music by Steven and Nathan Ryherd was wonderfully peaceful and uplifting. Many people commented on the gentle background music! Big thanks to all who helped organize the event, gather vendors and collect door prizes - Stephanie Welch, Norma Zuniga, Pat Streff, Priscana, and Mary Beth. On the day of the event more individuals helped to set up tables for vendors, registered moms, set up chairs for moms, directed moms, count breastfeeding moms, orchestrate photo opportunities, and spoke with the media - Sonia Imperial, Deborah Ehrhardt, Karen Bohr, Norma Zuniga, Dora Trevino, Priscana Huddleston, Angie, Ruby Farias, Monica Farias, Kathy Parkes, Mary Beth and Glenna Jameson. Special thanks for all who brought food to the San Antonio Food Bank.

The biggest thanks possible goes to the San Antonio Food Bank. They provided an excellant space for both vendors and breastfeeding families. They also provided snacks and drinks for everyone. I was amazed how many people came to not only be sure their child/children were counted as being breastfed, but also they came to learn different aspects of breastfeeding. There were 22 babies present at the San Antonio Challenge and about 110 people at the event! The food bank was able to handle that huge group of participants. THANKS!

Memorable highlights: Stephanie was both an organizer and a breastfeeding mom. She was thrilled to be able to spend time with other moms who were breastfeeding infants over 1 year. We were reminded of the child, probably about 14 months old who was holding a fork while breastfeeding - too cute! We also had a mom who was tandem breastfeeding - they were a precious family. We saw smiles everywhere! Not one crying baby or toddler! The families present were obviously well nurtured and highly supportive of each other. What a gift that starts and is enhanced with breastfeeding.

Thank you to everyone for helping to support and spread the good news about breastfeeding!

See you next year at the Challenge!

San Antonio - Mano A Mano

Our 3rd annual benefit dinner and silent auction to celebrate 2008 World Breastfeeding Week was held at Beto's on August 4, 2008!  Despite the stifling heat on the day before the hurricane, it was a huge success! The food was delicious and the LIVE MUSIC by Steven and Nathan Ryherd was peaceful and uplifting.

There were over 45 people in attendance; adults as well as children participated in the activities. For the children there was a covered play area. For the adults there was a Silent Auction from 7 - 8 pm with over 30 items available for lucky...persistent bidders. There were items for baby care, breastfeeding support, jewelery, goodie baskets for kids, fresh cake and cookies, CD's, music lessons, UT and A&M blankets and more! Many took part in a Split the Pot opportunity from 5 - 9pm. The winner was Pam Lloyd! Boy was she happy to turn her $2 donation into $77! There were so many ways to support the San Antonio Breastfeeding Coalition, we appreciate everyone's participation.

The proceeds of this event helps support the International Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge in San Antonio on October 11. This will be a fun filled day to highten awareness of breastfeeding and give back to breastfeeding families in the form of education, support, free snacks and a free folding chair.

FYI - Beto's offers a monthly fundraising opportunity for community organizations. Simply enjoy dinner like normal - then Beto's graciously donates 10% of all sales between 5 - 9 pm directly back to SABC! Beto's is located at 8142 Broadway (just inside Loop 410). Call 930-9393 or visit their website at betoscomidalatina.com for more information about Beto's and their Mano A Mano benefit program.
