  • What is a Lactation Consultant?

    A lactation consultant is someone with many years of practical experience as a breastfeeding consultant and- has passed the International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners exam and can put the initials I.B.C.L.C. (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) after their name.

  • How Do I Become a Lactation Consultant?

    There are three pathways to achieve your IBCLC. The International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant Examiners website contains an interactive way to assess which pathway would be best for you. The IBLCE Exam Blueprint lists the areas you should be knowledgeable in:

     

    1. Become very knowledgeable about the latest information on breastfeeding.

     

    2. Take a course on breastfeeding.

     

    3. Get practical experience working as a breastfeeding counselor.

     

    4. Join the International Lactation Consultant's Association.

     

    5. Join LactNet.

     

    6. Improve your knowledge, skills, and contacts by going to breastfeeding conferences.

     

    7. Take the Lactation Consultant exam once you have met the requirements.

    • DSHS Principles of Lactation Management Class

    Participants will be able to counsel families about the benefits of breastfeeding, assist the mother in managing common breastfeeding problems, make appropriate referrals, teach breastfeeding classes, prepare breastfeeding materials, and support breastfeeding through breastfeeding friendly policies and procedures.

    • Marie Biancuzzo - Lactation Exam Review Course

    Prepare for the IBLCE exam with two exciting, information-packed days with

    Marie Biancuzzo, internationally known speaker, author and clinical expert. This course will enable you to tackle the toughest topics with confidence!

    Review pertinent facts and principles related to all 14 categories of the exam blueprint in an interactive and responsive learning environment. Learn effective test-taking strategies, discuss evidence-based practices for breastfeeding management, and brush up on your recognition of clinical conditions. Special emphasis will be given to topics that have given past candidates difficulty. This course is followed up by the one-day Picture Perfect seminar in all locations!

    • TDSHS Lactation Counseling and Problem Solving

    This course is designed for health professionals who counsel breastfeeding mothers, and would like to improve problem-solving skills. The emphasis is in critical thinking and the helping process. It is an intermediate level course and is activity oriented. Course content is reviewed on a regular basis by the authors in accordance with the Standards of Practice set forth by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).

    • TDSHS Clinical Lactation Practicum

    The Clinical Lactation Practicum (CLP) is a training opportunity focused on increasing the health care professional’s knowledge base for identifying a lactation problem and implementing a scientific research-based intervention. The CLP provides an opportunity for direct observation, instruction, and hands-on demonstration of breastfeeding support and counseling. Students participate one-to-one with lactation consultation performed by an experienced board-certified lactation consultant.
